The Real BBPP
Balloon Boy and the Porcupine Pals
is actually just one person: Gary T. Wight.
Gary Wight was born March 10, 1978 in Idaho. He began playing the bass guitar when he was around 10 years old. At the age of 13 or 14, his father bought him a Fender Squire and a small practice amp with distortion. Rather than playing cover songs, Gary preferred writing his own music (although nothing was ever written down).
Gary played guitar with his close friend, Cory Thompson, for the next two or three years. When the two were juniors in high school, they formed the band Pathetic, adding drummer Blake Pedersen and vocalist Ian Harris. Rather than playing cover songs, Pathetic mostly played original material. The band played seven or eight gigs over the next two years, ranging from high school dances to parents-out-of-town parties.
After high school, the various members of Pathetic went their separate ways. Gary served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Upon returning in 1999, he married Amanda Hill of Twin Falls, Idaho. Gary and Amanda now have four children.
Gary studied English literature at the College of Southern Idaho and Brigham Young University. He then "sold out" and obtained a law degree from the University of Utah in December, 2005. Gary now works at the law firm of Kipp and Christian, P.C. in downtown Salt Lake City, practicing law in the area of civil litigation.
Despite keeping busy with his family, education, and career, Gary continued to write music. Upon graduating from law school, his family bought him a drum set as a graduation present. Gary gradually gathered various materials in order to record an album: computer recording software, computer-based amplifiers, microphones, and other necessities.
Over the next two years, Gary recorded Antihooliganism at his home in Clearfield, Utah. He recorded all guitars, drums, synths, and vocals. For recording locations, Gary used his closet, living room, and kitchen. Gary is currently writing a book entitled The Continuing Adventures of Balloon Boy and the Porcupine Pals, which tells the story of an idiot superhero and his butt-ugly, wannabe girlfriend. Early on in the recording process, Gary decided to use plot points from the book as lyrics for the album.
You can find Gary on facebook, myspace, and blogspot.
Antihooliganism is dedicated to Tyler Harris. Gary looks forward to seeing him again someday.
